Shusha, also spelled Shushi, is a scenic town in the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh, lying within the de facto independent but internationally unrecognised Republic of Artsakh, although Azerbaijan has regained control over the town in the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war. Shusha stands at an altitude of about 1,400-1,800 meters and is a historically significant site, known as the cultural capital of Azerbaijan. It was once renowned for its music and poets. The town boasts of impressive architecture, with the Shusha Castle, Yukhari Govhar Agha Mosque, and several churches reflecting its diverse cultural heritage. Shusha is surrounded by fortified walls and has been a strategic location due to its high elevation above the surrounding Karabakh mountains. The area is also noted for its picturesque landscapes, dense forests, and the nearby Dashalty River. The region has a deep history of conflict, which has unfortunately led to extensive damage to many of its historical buildings and monuments. Nevertheless, Shusha continues to be a symbol of cultural significance and heritage for the people of Azerbaijan.
