Koshak Mahal in Chanderi, Madhya Pradesh, is a remarkable example of Islamic architecture and is believed to have been built in the 15th century by Sultan Mahmud Khilji of Malwa as a hunting lodge or sarai. The initially planned seven-storied structure only saw the completion of two stories, and it is laid out in the style of a symmetrical cross with four nearly identical facades. Each side has a large pointed arch leading to a central courtyard. The Koshak Mahal is divided into four equal parts, each part designed as a Daalaan with rooms and galleries around it. Today, it lies in a state of picturesque ruin, showcasing the fusion of Indo-Islamic architecture such as stone jaalis and robust construction. Its fallen grandeur is a testament to the rich historical tapestry of Chanderi, which is also renowned for its exquisite handwoven sarees. The structure stands alone in a serene setting, making it a photographer’s delight and a perfect site for history enthusiasts.
