Ideal visit duration: 1-2 Days
Khajuraho is a group of Hindu and Jain temples in Madhya Pradesh, India, famous for their erotic sculptures. The temples, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, were built between AD 950 and 1050 by the Chandela dynasty. They are a marvel of Indian architectural genius, with intricate carvings and detailed artistry that showcase the skill of the ancient craftsmen. Of the original 85 temples, only about 20 have survived the ravages of time. These are spread across six square kilometers and are broadly divided into three groups: Western, Eastern, and Southern. The Western Group of temples, the largest and most renowned, includes the magnificent Kandariya Mahadeva Temple which exemplifies medieval temple architecture. The sculptures depict various aspects of life, including spirituality, music, dance, and also intimate expressions of love and erotica. Khajuraho's temples are emblematic of the Indian approach to human sexuality and are a testament to the openness and inclusivity of Hinduism. The site, surrounded by the Vindhya mountain range, offers a spellbinding experience which extends beyond the temples, to include the ancient culture of the region that is also celebrated annually during the Khajuraho Dance Festival.
