Lakshmi Ashram, also known as Sarla Ashram, is situated in the serene hill station of Kausani in Uttarakhand, India. This ashram is a center for social service and education for rural women, established in 1946 by Catherine Hillman, a disciple of Mahatma Gandhi who later became known as Sarlaben. Nestled amidst lush greenery with a backdrop of the majestic Himalayan peaks, Lakshmi Ashram is a tranquil place that operates on Gandhian principles. The aim of the ashram is to empower women through education and vocational training. Visitors to Lakshmi Ashram can witness the simple and self-sufficient lifestyle of the residents and learn about their daily activities, which include farming, cooking, and teaching. The ashram’s serene environment also makes it a perfect spot for meditation and spiritual reflection. Although it is relatively modest in terms of facilities, its setting in the beautiful Kumaon hills and its emphasis on sustainable living make it an inspiring place to visit.
