How To Reach Lukla

Welcome to Lukla, Nepal – The Gateway to Mount Everest

Getting to Lukla

Lukla is a small town in the Khumbu Pasanglhamu Rural Municipality of Solukhumbu District in the Sagarmatha Zone of northeastern Nepal. It is a popular starting point for treks to Everest Base Camp and other high Himalaya expeditions due to its proximity to the world's highest mountain, Mount Everest. The primary way to reach Lukla is by air, as road connections are limited and treks are long and strenuous.

Air Travel
  • Tribhuvan International Airport (Kathmandu): The most common route to Lukla is a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla's Tenzing–Hillary Airport. The flight duration is about 25 to 30 minutes. Weather conditions in the mountains are unpredictable, so flights early in the morning tend to have better chances of success.
  • Ramechhap Airport: Due to congestion at Kathmandu's airport, flights from Ramechhap to Lukla are also common, especially during the peak trekking seasons. Ramechhap is approximately 130 km east of Kathmandu, and the drive from Kathmandu can take around 4-6 hours.
Alternate Overland Route

If you prefer an adventure or cannot secure a flight, you can also reach Lukla by a combination of bus and trek.

  • Take a bus or a private jeep from Kathmandu to Jiri or Salleri. This ride can take about 8-10 hours to Salleri and about 6-8 hours to Jiri.
  • From Jiri, you will need to trek for approximately 5-7 days to reach Lukla.
  • From Salleri, the trek to Lukla can be completed in about 2-3 days.
Important Considerations
  • Flights to Lukla are weather dependent; delays and cancellations are common. Always plan a few buffer days in your itinerary to account for this.
  • Carry cash as ATMs may not always be available or functional in Lukla.
  • Acclimate properly if you are trekking to higher altitudes to prevent altitude sickness.
  • Travel insurance that covers emergency evacuation is highly recommended due to the remote location and possible health issues associated with high altitude.
