Mawphlang Sacred Forest Tourism
Type of destination: Nature & Parks
Ideal visit duration: 1 to 3 hours
Mawphlang Sacred Forest, located around 25 km from Shillong in Meghalaya, India, is an exemplary specimen of nature conservation, deeply rooted in Khasi cultural and spiritual beliefs. This ancient grove covers approximately 192 acres of rich, verdant land. It is considered sacred by the locals, who have religiously preserved it for centuries. The traditional tribal laws prohibit any interference with the plants and wildlife inside the forest, allowing for a unique ecosystem to thrive. With an abundance of ferns, orchids, and rare plant species, the forest is not just a biodiversity hotspot but also a treasure-trove of medicinal herbs, which the indigenous community values highly. Enveloped in mists and cloud, this forest exudes an ethereal atmosphere and offers an immersive experience into nature's untouched beauty. The crisscrossing streams and the symbiotic relationship between the community and nature here narrate the story of an age-old bond between humans and environment.

Sacred forest visit during second week of August
Nice place, great scenic beauty, people managing were very friendly. The trek was very small, which didn't expect, since most of the forest was closed for visitors during my time of visit.
