Murikkady (Thekkady) History
Welcome to Murikkady, Thekkady, Kerala, India
The History of Tourism in Murikkady
Nestled amidst the verdant hills of Thekkady in Kerala, Murikkady is a tranquil village known for its spice plantations and panoramic views. The history of tourism in this serene locale is deeply linked with the overall development of Thekkady as a prime travel destination in South India.
Thekkady came into the limelight when the British colonial rulers in India discovered the potential of its sprawling tea, coffee, and spice plantations in the 19th century. However, the foundation for tourism in Murikkady was laid with the establishment of the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary in 1950, attracting visitors interested in wildlife and nature-based experiences.
Over the years, Murikkady has benefited from the spill-over effects of Thekkady's growing popularity. However, it was not until the late 20th century that Murikkady began to be recognized as a destination in its own right. With increasing environmental consciousness, many tourists began seeking out the village's organic spice gardens and the opportunity for agro-tourism.
Today, visitors to Murikkady can enjoy guided tours of spice plantations, where cardamom, pepper, coffee, and tea are cultivated. The evolution of tourism in Murikkady has been gradual and sustainable, ensuring that the beauty of the region is preserved for future generations while also providing livelihood opportunities for the local community.
Latest Tourism Trends in Murikkady
