Spread over an area of 925 sq km, it has a diverse range of flora and fauna, with thick evergreen and moist deciduous forests coupled with grasslands. The Periyar Lake, formed by the construction of the Mullaperiyar Dam, runs through the park, allowing visitors to observe wildlife from boat cruises. Besides elephants and tigers, there are gaur, sambar, wild pigs, langurs, and a variety of birds. The sanctuary offers opportunities for trekking, elephant riding, and experiencing the rich tribal culture.
