Murud Janjira Fort stands as a remarkable example of ancient engineering and architecture located on an oval-shaped rock off the Arabian Sea coast near the port town of Murud, in the Raigad district of Maharashtra, India. Despite multiple attempts by the Marathas, the British, and the Portuguese to conquer it, this island fortress remained undefeated, a testimony of its strategic importance and formidable construction. Built by the Siddis of Janjira in the 15th century, the fort boasts 19 bastions, which provided a panoramic view and an upper hand in battles. The main gate of the fort faces Rajapuri on the shore and can only be seen when one is about 40 feet away from it. The fort engulfs within its robust walls, ruins of palaces, water tanks, and a grand mosque. The architectural marvel of its time uses local stone and lime, which has stood the test of time and salty sea winds. It is accessible by sailboats and ferry services.
