Kolaba Fort, often referred to as Kulaba Fort or Alibag Fort, is an old military fortification located in the coastal town of Alibaug, in the Raigad district of Maharashtra, India. It was built by the Marathas in 1652 under the leadership of Shivaji Maharaj and stands as a testament to the Maratha naval prowess. The fort's elevation of 25 feet above sea level provides strategic advantages and spectacular views of the Arabian Sea. One can see the fort's ramparts, bastions, and the main gateway all skirted by water during high tide, making it accessible only during low tide via a narrow strip of land. The fort also houses temples dedicated to Hindu deities, with a freshwater well for the fort's inhabitants. It's a blend of historical architecture and natural beauty, offering an insight into India's rich maritime heritage. The sturdy walls, despite weathering the test of time, echo the fort's glorious past while facing the sea.
