Neermahal Water Palace Tourism
Type of destination: Heritage Site
Neermahal, meaning 'Water Palace', is a former royal palace situated in the middle of the Rudrasagar Lake in Tripura, India. Built by Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Debbarma of the erstwhile kingdom of Tripura in 1930, this palace is a magnificent example of an East meets West architectural style. The palace blends Hindu and Islamic architectural motifs, making it unique in eastern India. It was meant to serve as a summer retreat for the King and his family. Neermahal stands majestically with its red-tinted walls rising from the blue waters of the lake. The palace is accessible by boat, and its reflection shimmering on the liquid surface is a sight to behold. This historic building is split into two parts – the western side known as Andar Mahal, which was made for the royal family, and the open-air eastern side, which was designed for the entertainment of the royals and their guests, including performances and water sports. The palace grounds are also a haven for bird watchers since the Rudrasagar Lake is a stopover for a variety of migratory birds.
