Penukonda Fort, holding historical significance, is located in Anantapur district in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India. This ancient fort, which translates to 'big hill' in the local language, was once the second capital of the Vijayanagara Empire. With its origin dating back to the 14th century, the fort was constructed by the Vijayanagara emperor, Sri Krishnadevaraya. The fort exemplifies remarkable Indo-Islamic architecture and comprises various structures, including temples, mosques, and palaces, showcasing the secular nature of the Vijayanagara rulers. It is situated on a large granite hill, making it a vantage point that was used for defensive purposes. Over time, the fort has witnessed various rulers and undergone numerous modifications, resulting in a complex that embodies a rich tapestry of cultural and historical narratives. The prominent landmarks within the fort include Gagan Mahal, which was the palace of the queen, Shahi Masjid, and numerous temples dedicated to Hindu deities.
