The name 'Thimmamma Marrimanu' translates to 'Thimmamma's Banyan Tree' and is associated with a local legend. According to the story, Thimmamma was a woman who committed sati (self-immolation) on her husband's funeral pyre in 1433. A banyan tree grew at the spot of her death, which has stretched out over the years to cover an area of around 5 acres. Local belief holds that couples unable to have children are blessed after visiting this tree. The area surrounding the tree has been developed into a sort of park with a temple dedicated to Thimmamma.
