Traveling to Petra, Jordan

The ancient city of Petra, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, is located in the southwestern desert of Jordan. It is famous for its rock-cut architecture and water conduit system. Here’s how you can reach this archaeological treasure:

By Air

Queen Alia International Airport (AMM) in Amman is the nearest international airport. From the airport, you can take a bus, rent a car, or hire a taxi to reach Petra.

By Road

The distance from Amman to Petra is approximately 236 kilometers and can be covered in 3 hours by car.

  • Bus: JETT and other tourist buses offer daily services from Amman to Petra. Advanced booking is recommended.
  • Car Rental: Hire a car from Amman or the airport. Having a car gives you the flexibility to stop at noteworthy sites along the King's Highway.
  • Taxi: Private taxis can be hired, though they are more expensive than buses. Ensure you agree on a fare before departing.

By Tour

Many tourists opt for a guided tour which includes transportation to and from Petra. This is an excellent option if you prefer not to deal with the logistics of transportation.

Once in Petra

Upon arriving in the town of Wadi Musa, which is the gateway to Petra, you can access the site entrance by walking, hiring a horse-drawn carriage, or taking a short taxi ride.
