Punakha Dzong, also known as Pungtang Dewa chhenbi Phodrang, is a majestic dzong located at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers in the Punakha-Wangdue valley. Reaching Punakha Dzong involves several modes of transportation:
International Travelers: The nearest international airport to Punakha is Paro International Airport. Visitors can fly into Paro from different international locations. Airlines such as Druk Air and Bhutan Airlines operate flights to Paro.
Domestic Flights: There are no domestic flights directly to Punakha since it does not have an airport. Travelers will use Paro as the primary airport and can then continue their journey overland.
From Paro: Punakha is about 124 kilometers from Paro and it normally takes around 3.5 to 4 hours by car. Travelers can hire a taxi or arrange for a private vehicle through a travel agency. The drive includes a scenic route over the Dochu La pass, which offers stunning panoramic views of the Himalayas on a clear day.
From Thimphu: From the capital city Thimphu, Punakha is approximately 72 kilometers away, which takes about 2 to 3 hours by car. The route also crosses the Dochu La pass.
There are regular bus services from major cities like Thimphu and Paro to Punakha. This is a more economical option but less flexible compared to hiring a cab.
All foreign tourists (except visitors from India, Bangladesh, and the Maldives) need a visa to enter Bhutan and must book their trip through a licensed Bhutanese tour operator or one of their international partners.
