The best time to visit Punakha Dzong is during the spring months from March to May when the weather is pleasant, and the lush valley surrounding the dzong is in full bloom. This period provides travelers with a comfortable climate for exploring the majestic fortress and its surroundings. The temperatures during these months range from a mild 15°C to a warm 25°C, ensuring a comfortable visit without the extreme cold that can be prevalent in the winter months or the heavy monsoon rains in the summer. Moreover, spring in Punakha is particularly enchanting due to the blooming jacaranda trees that surround the dzong, providing a stunning purple canopy.
Another optimal time for a visit is during the autumn season, from September to November. The weather is still favorable, with clear skies offering excellent conditions for sightseeing and photography. During these months, you might also get a chance to witness one of Bhutan's most famous festivals, the Punakha Tshechu, which usually takes place in February or March. Although slightly chillier, this festival period is a marvelous opportunity to experience Bhutanese culture with traditional masks dances, religious processions, and a vibrant atmosphere. Do note that visiting during the Tshechu will require planning well in advance as accommodation and services can be in high demand due to the influx of both local and international tourists.
