Traveling to the Street of Facades

The Street of Facades is a stunning array of tombs carved into the rock face in the ancient Nabatean city of Petra. It is located within the Petra Archaeological Park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and is one of the many wonders to explore within this historic region.

By Air: The closest international airport to Petra is Queen Alia International Airport (AMM) in Amman, the capital of Jordan. From the airport, you can continue your journey to Petra by car, taxi, or bus.

By Car: Renting a car from Amman or Aqaba provides a flexible option for reaching Petra. The drive from Amman usually takes around 3-4 hours, while from Aqaba, it is approximately 2 hours.

By Bus: Daily bus services run by JETT and other local companies are available from Amman to Petra. Tickets should be purchased in advance, especially during the tourist season.

By Taxi: Private taxis can drive you to Petra from various cities, though this is generally more expensive than taking the bus. Be sure to agree on the fare before departure.

Once in Petra: To reach the Street of Facades, you will begin at the Petra Visitor Center. Here, you can buy your tickets and pick up a map. From the Visitor Center, you will walk through the Siq, a narrow canyon leading into Petra. After approximately 1.2 kilometers, you will reach the Treasury, and from there it is a short walk to the Street of Facades.

The Street of Facades is accessible by foot, and you can also take a horse-drawn carriage for part of the route. However, to experience the true splendor of Petra, it is best explored on foot.

Things to Keep in Mind

  • Ensure you have comfortable walking shoes as there is a lot of ground to cover on uneven surfaces.
  • Bring plenty of water, a sun hat, and sunscreen to protect against the heat.
  • Petra entry tickets are required; purchasing a Jordan Pass beforehand can save money and includes your visa.
  • The site opens at 6 AM and closes at 6 PM in summer and 4 PM in winter, giving you all day to explore.
  • Hiring a local guide can enhance your experience with insights into the history and culture of the area.
