Best Time To Visit Thiksey Monastery (Leh) In 2026 - 2027

Thiksey Monastery, perched atop a hill in Leh, Ladakh, is an impressive 12-story complex renowned for its pictorial library and awe-inspiring statues. When planning a visit to this serene and spiritual site, the best time to go is during the summer months, between June and September. During this period, Ladakh is most accessible, and the weather is favorable with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 30°C. This makes the trip comfortable for visitors, as winters in Ladakh can be extremely harsh with temperatures plummeting to sub-zero levels, making travel difficult and the monastery potentially inaccessible due to heavy snowfall.

Moreover, the monastery hosts the annual Thiksey Gustor Festival in October or November, depending on the Tibetan lunar calendar. It is considered a particularly auspicious time to visit as you can witness the vibrant cultural heritage of Ladakh first-hand. The festival lasts for two days and features sacred mask dances (Cham dances) and a series of rituals aimed at dispelling evil spirits. Visitors should keep in mind that while the festival period offers a uniquely rich cultural experience, it also attracts more tourists, so accommodation in nearby Leh should be booked in advance to ensure availability.
