Tirta Empul Temple is a significant temple complex and holy mountain spring located in the village of Manukaya in central Bali. This Hindu Balinese water temple is famous for its holy spring water, where devotees perform purification rituals. Tirta Empul means 'Holy Water Spring' in Balinese, and the spring is the source for various pools and ponds. Built around 962 A.D., it is a site of mythological significance where the legendary Indra created the spring to revive his forces poisoned by Mayadanawa. The temple’s architecture is a classic example of Balinese design with split gates, stone sculptures, and tropical gardens. Visitors are often captivated by the serene ambiance, ritualistic ceremonies, and intricate carvings. The temple complex consists of three main sections: the front, the middle for bathing pools, and the inner courtyard for prayers. The rectangular bathing pools with fountains allow visitors to dip in and are segregated for worship and public use.
If you want to experience the culture and customs, you have to. It's really worth it! Take a towel, bathing suit and a change of clothes.
