Food History of Trongsa Dzong, Trongsa, Bhutan

Trongsa Dzong, one of the largest and most impressive dzongs in Bhutan, has a food culture that is steeped in tradition. The cuisine of this region, like the rest of Bhutan, is influenced by the country's Buddhist heritage and the need to consume what is readily available in this mountainous terrain. Meals are typically communal, with a focus on locally sourced ingredients such as red rice, various types of chilies, and an array of homegrown vegetables. Cheese made from yak milk and a variety of mushrooms are also distinctive of the region's cuisine.
