The Undavalli Caves, a fine example of Indian rock-cut architecture, are located in the village of Undavalli in Guntur District, Andhra Pradesh, India, about 6 km southwest of Vijayawada. These caves are carved out of solid sandstone on a hillside and date back to the 4th to 5th centuries. The largest of the caves is a four-story structure with a huge statue of Lord Vishnu in a reclining posture, sculpted from a single block of granite. The main cave, which is a monolith, is adorned with numerous sculptures, including depictions of gods, goddesses, and mythological creatures. Notably, the caves were originally Buddhist monasteries and later converted into a Hindu temple complex. The architecture of the caves reflects the transition between Buddhist and Hindu beliefs, showcasing elements of both religions. The caves offer a magnificent view of the Krishna River, which flows nearby. The peaceful and scenic surroundings of the Undavalli Caves make them a significant historical and cultural spot, attracting tourists and history enthusiasts from all around.
