How To Reach Vientiane

Welcome to Vientiane, Laos Travel Guide

Vientiane, the laid-back capital city of Laos, is a hidden gem tucked into the heart of Southeast Asia. Known for its French colonial architecture, Buddhist temples, and Mekong Riverfront, Vientiana attracts travelers looking for a unique cultural experience. Here's how you can reach this serene city.

By Air

Wattay International Airport (VTE) is the main gateway for international travelers coming into Vientiane. Located only about 3 kilometers west of the city center, the airport is well-connected with various regional destinations. Many Asian airlines operate regular flights to Vientiane from hubs such as Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Hanoi, and Singapore.

Upon Arrival at the Airport

  • Taxis are available to take you into the city. Negotiate a fixed price before beginning your journey.
  • Some hotels may offer airport shuttle services, so it's best to check with your accommodation prior to arrival.

By Land

Border crossings from Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, and China allow for overland travel to Vientian. The most popular routes include:

From Thailand:

  • The Friendship Bridge spans the Mekong River connecting Nong Khai, Thailand to Thanaleng/ Vientiane, Laos. Buses and shuttles frequently traverse this international crossing.
  • Once you clear customs and immigration, shuttles can take you into the heart of Vientiane.

From Vietnam:

  • Direct buses run from Hanoi to Vientiane, crossing the border at Nam Phao/Cau Treo.

From Cambodia:

  • Buses are available from Phnom Penh to Vientiane, usually involving a transfer at Vang Vieng or Pakse.

From China:

  • The border at Boten in China’s Yunnan province is another entry point, from where you can find transport to Vientian.

By Water

Although Vientiane is not directly accessible by boat, the Mekong River offers an adventurous route to travelers who are coming from other parts of Laos or the bordertown of Chiang Khong in Thailand. The closest you can get to Vientiane by water is to the town of Pak Lay, where you can then transfer to a bus for the remaining journey.

By Train

As of the time of writing, a train service directly to Vientiane is not available. However, the Laos-China Railway, connecting Vientiane to Kunming in China, is in development and may soon offer another option for travelers.

Local Transport

Once in Vientiane, you have several options to navigate the city:

  • Tuk-tuks are the most common and can be hailed from the roadside.
  • For more comfort, taxis can be booked, often through your accommodation.
  • Rental bikes or motorcycles offer a more independent way to explore the city and surrounding areas. Be sure to wear a helmet and have the proper license.

Whether you're flying in from a neighboring country or crossing the border overland, Vientian's charm is easily accessible. Enjoy your journey to this tranquil city!
