The Ajanta Caves are a series of 29 Buddhist cave temples cut into the rocky cliffs of the Sahyadri hills in Maharashtra, India. Discovered in 1819 by a group of British officers, these caves date from the 2nd century BCE to about 480 CE and are renowned for their magnificent frescoes and sculptures. These caves consist of monasteries (viharas) and worship-halls (chaityas), where Buddhist monks lived, studied, and worshipped. The artworks depict the Jataka tales, which are stories of the Buddha's previous lives. The caves embody a tranquil and serene ambiance, reflecting the meditative ethos of the time. The site illustrates the confluence of Buddhist religious art with a perfectly harmonious coexistence of architecture, painting, and sculpture. Ajanta has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its outstanding contribution to the cultural heritage of humanity. It represents the pinnacle of ancient Indian artistry in its most refined form.
