Daulatabad Fort, also known as Devagiri or Deogiri, is a historic fortified citadel located in Maharashtra, India. The fort stands on a conical hill dominating the landscape with its imposing presence. It was built in the 12th century by the Yadava dynasty and was known for its strategic position and formidable defenses which includes a moat, glacis, and imposing walls. The fort has changed hands multiple times, starting from the Yadavas to the Khilji dynasty, Tughlaq dynasty, Bahamani Sultans and finally, the Mughals. The name 'Daulatabad' refers to 'City of Fortune', given by Muhammad bin Tughluq when he briefly shifted his capital here from Delhi. The three encircling fortification walls with battlements, bastions and gates, including the imposing Chand Minar and Chini Mahal, infuse a sense of grandeur. Getting to the top requires a trek through a series of dark, narrow and spiral staircases which was a defense mechanism to confuse the enemy. The fort's complex includes ruins of palatial residences, granaries, water cisterns, and ancient step wells.
