The optimal time to visit Bagan, known for its archaeological wonders and pagoda-studded landscape, is during the dry season which runs from November to February. During this period, the weather is predominantly cool and dry, which makes it perfect for sightseeing and exploring the vast number of temples comfortably. Temperatures hover around 20-30°C (68-86°F), providing a respite from the scorching heat common just before and after this season. The cooler temperatures also mean that sunrise and sunset balloon rides over the ancient city are particularly spectacular, offering breathtaking vistas in the most comfortable climate.
However, visiting Bagan just before the peak season, in October, or towards the end, in March, can also be advantageous. While the temperature starts to climb, the crowds are not as dense, and the landscape benefits from the rejuvenated lushness brought about by the preceding monsoon season. This slight off-peak time maintains much of the favorable weather of the dry season but affords a touch more solitude among the temples. Regardless of the season, visitors should be ready for early morning temple explorations to avoid the midday heat and to witness the famous sunrises over the pagodas of Bagan, which are an absolute must-see.
