Banaras Hindu University (BHU) (Varanasi) History

The Historical Significance of Banaras Hindu University (BHU)

Located in the ancient city of Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India, Banaras Hindu University (BHU) stands as a testament to the confluence of education, culture, and spirituality. Founded by the visionary freedom fighter, educationist, and nationalist, Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, the university was established in 1916 during the British colonial era. It was a pioneering initiative representing the synthesis of ancient Vedic wisdom with modern scientific knowledge, contributing to the cultural renaissance of India.

The Birth of Tourism at BHU

The history of tourism at BHU is interwoven with the fabric of Varanasi itself – one of the world's oldest continually inhabited cities, and a major cultural and religious hub in India. The establishment of BHU added an academic and intellectual appeal to Varanasi's already rich tapestry of cultural attractions, including temples, ghats, and traditional art forms.

Over the years, countless domestic and international tourists, scholars, and dignitaries have flocked to BHU, drawn by its reputation as a center of learning and its serene and beautiful campus, which is an architectural marvel in itself. The blend of Gothic, Indian, and Islamic architectural styles, as seen in the iconic Vishwanath Temple within the campus, stands out as a highlight for visitors.

Emergence of BHU as a Tourist Destination

With its sprawling gardens, historical buildings, and the famed Saraswati Bhawan Library, BHU slowly morphed from a purely educational institute to a serene tourist attraction. Among its many landmarks, the New Vishwanath Temple, which is a replica of the original Kashi Vishwanath Temple, draws numerous visitors throughout the year. The university's commitment to preserving and promoting Indian arts, music, and culture, through regular performances and exhibitions, also enhances its appeal as a destination.

Current Trends in Tourism at BHU

In recent years, BHU has embraced the growing desire for experiential and educational tourism. The trend sees visitors seeking to engage more deeply with the destinations they visit by learning about their history, culture, and local life. To meet this demand, BHU often organizes guided heritage walks and educational tours, allowing visitors to appreciate the profound academic and spiritual ethos embedded within its walls.

Moreover, the International Centre for Cultural Studies (ICCS) and other departments within the university regularly conduct workshops, seminars, and conferences that attract intellectuals, further bolstering tourism. The presence of foreign students and faculty adds a global dimension to the local culture, creating a multicultural environment that fascinates tourists.

With the rise of digital technology, virtual tours and online repositories of the university's vast resources have also become a part of its tourism experience, making it accessible to people, irrespective of their location. The institution has become more than just a place for higher education – it has transcended into a mosaic of academic pursuits, historical exploration, and cultural experiences, drawing increasing numbers of tourists every year.
