Basistha Ashram Temple (Guwahati) History

Welcome to Basistha Ashram Temple

Located in the verdant outskirts of the bustling city of Guwahati, Assam, the Basistha Ashram Temple is a serene spiritual haven. Rooted in the rich tapestry of Indian mythology and history, the temple is dedicated to Sage Vasishta, a revered figure in Hinduism, and embodies a legacy that dates back to the Vedic period.

Historical Significance

The Basistha Ashram Temple is believed to have been founded by Sage Vasishta himself, one of the seven great sages or Saptarishis. The ashram is situated on the banks of the mountain streams originating from the hills of Meghalaya, which become the Basistha and Bahini/Bharalu rivers as they descend. It is said that the sage had set up his hermitage here and it eventually evolved into a place of worship and pilgrimage.

The temple, as it stands now, was constructed by Ahom King Rajeswar Singha in the late 18th century, around 1764 A.D. This addition to the historical site catalyzed the flurry of pilgrims who began visiting the temple, seeking blessings and a piece of its tranquil environment.
