Bhakra Nangal Dam is a concrete gravity dam across the Sutlej River, near the border between Punjab and Himachal Pradesh, India. The project took place in the region surrounding the towns of Bhakra and Nangal in the Indian State of Punjab and was part of the larger multipurpose Bhakra Nangal Project. The dam, at 225 meters, is one of the highest gravity dams in the world, which helps in irrigation and hydroelectric power generation. The Bhakra Nangal Dam comprises two separate dams, Bhakra Dam on the original river in Bhakra and the Nangal dam downstream. The dam helps to prevent floods as well as supply water to neighboring states. It has a reservoir, known as the 'Gobind Sagar Lake', which is a well-known spot for various water sports activities. The size of the dam is massive, and it took nearly 15 years to construct, from 1948 to 1963. The Bhakra Nangal Dam is not only a significant source of power generation but also a tourist attraction because of its impressive structure, surrounding lush greenery, and the importance it holds in India's infrastructure development.
