Must-Try Foods In Coorg (Karnataka) For Tourists 2026 - 2027

Food History of Coorg, Karnataka, India

The culinary traditions of Coorg, nestled in the western ghats of Karnataka, are deeply influenced by the local geography, culture, and the abundance of natural ingredients. Coorg cuisine, also known as Kodava cuisine, is distinguished by its bold and rustic flavors which have evolved over time. The ethnic Kodava people have historically been landowners and their diet largely depended on locally sourced produce including rice, fresh vegetables, and a variety of meats, albeit excluding cow meat due to religious reverence of the animal.

Spices play a crucial role in the food preparation of Coorg, with black pepper and cardamom being important crops in the region. The cuisine is also renowned for its distinctive pork dishes, although for this discussion we’ll focus on vegetarian and other non-cow non-veg options.
