Dungeshwari Hills, also known as Pragbodhi, is situated about 12 kilometers to the northeast of Bodh Gaya, in Bihar, India. These hills hold a significant place in the Buddhist tradition as it is believed that Lord Buddha spent several years here before descending to Bodh Gaya where he attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree. The hills are dotted with various caves where ascetics and monks, including Buddha, are said to have meditated. The most notable among these is the Mahakala Cave. Visitors can also find a couple of small temples and stupas in the area which have been erected as a tribute to Buddha's period of austerities. The tranquil atmosphere of Dungeshwari Hills against the backdrop of rocky outcrops and sparse greenery offers a spiritual retreat for pilgrims and tourists alike. The climb to the caves provides a panoramic view of the surrounding plains, creating a serene and contemplative environment.
