How to Reach Florence

By Air

Amerigo Vespucci Airport, also known as Peretola, is the main airport serving Florence. It is located just 4 kilometers from the city center. International and domestic flights arrive here, connecting Florence to several European cities and beyond.

To reach the city center from the airport, you can use the Vola in Bus shuttle service, which operates from the airport to the main railway station, Santa Maria Novella. Taxis and car rental services are also available at the airport.

By Train

Florence's main rail hub is Santa Maria Novella (SMN) station, centrally located and well-connected to Italy's extensive train network. High-speed trains such as Frecciarossa, Italo, and Intercity services link Florence with Rome, Milan, Venice, and other major Italian cities.

Tickets can be purchased online, through various apps, or directly at the station. Always remember to validate your ticket before boarding regional trains to avoid fines.

By Car

Florence is accessed by the A1 Motorway, which connects Milan to Naples via Florence, Rome, and Bologna. The A11 and A12 highways also serve Florence and provide connections to Pisa, Lucca, and the coast.

Be aware that Florence's historic center is a Limited Traffic Zone (ZTL), which is controlled by cameras. Non-resident access is restricted, and hefty fines apply for unauthorized entry. Parking in designated areas outside the ZTL and using public transportation is advisable.

By Bus

Several long-distance bus services operate to and from Florence, connecting the city with other Italian and European destinations. The main bus station is located next to the SMN train station. Companies like FlixBus and Baltour offer comfortable and cost-efficient travel options.

Tips for Travelers

  • Book accommodation well in advance, especially during peak tourist seasons.
  • Invest in a good city map or download an offline map on your smartphone.
  • If driving, familiarize yourself with the ZTL areas to avoid fines.
  • Consider purchasing the Firenze Card for unlimited access to the majority of museums and public transportation.
