History of the Hanoi Opera House

The Hanoi Opera House, located at the heart of the city, is a historical and cultural landmark in Hanoi, Vietnam. Inspired by the Palais Garnier in Paris, it serves as a testament to the architectural and artistic influences during the French colonial period in Vietnam. It was designed by two French architects, Harlay and Broyer, and was constructed between 1901 and 1911. Since its inauguration, the Opera House has played a pivotal role in the cultural staging of the city.

Distinguished by its classical French architecture with Gothic themes, the Hanoi Opera House is a prime example of colonial grandeur. Initially, it hosted performances for the French elites and then gradually became accessible to the Vietnamese public. In 1995, the Hanoi Opera House underwent a massive renovation to preserve its original beauty and improve its acoustics.
