Best Time to Visit Hemis Monastery

Hemis Monastery, located in Leh, Ladakh, India, is a prominent Buddhist monastery nestled in the tranquil Himalayan ranges. The best time to visit this serene destination is during the summer months, from May to September. During this season, Ladakh witnesses a surge in tourists due to its pleasant weather, with temperatures ranging between 15°C to 30°C. This is the perfect climate to explore the rugged terrains and enjoy the lush greenery surrounding the monastery, engaging with the local culture without the hindrances of cold weather. The monastery is more accessible in summer, as winter snow usually blocks the roads leading to it.

Another compelling reason to plan a visit to Hemis Monastery during this time is the famous Hemis Festival. Held annually in June or July, coinciding with the birth anniversary of Guru Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche), the festival is a colorful two-day event that showcases the rich heritage of the region. Tourists and locals alike are treated to an exhibition of traditional music, dance, and elaborate costumes as the lamas perform the Cham Dance, a sacred masked dance. The energetic atmosphere and cultural splendor of the Hemis Festival make it a must-see event, thus making June or July particularly ideal for a visit to the monastery.
