The Himalayan Zoological Park, also known as the Gangtok Zoo, is located across the opposite hillside of Ganesh Tok in Gangtok, Sikkim. Established in 1991, the zoological park covers an area of 230 hectares at an average altitude of 1780 meters, making it one of the highest zoos in India. Unlike traditional zoos, animals here live in enclosures that closely resemble their natural habitats. This expansive park is home to various species native to the Himalayan region, including the Red Panda, Snow Leopard, Himalayan Black Bear, Tibetan Wolf, and more. The park's design allows visitors to walk through its forested paths while observing wildlife, offering an immersive and educational experience. Conservation efforts and breeding programs for the endangered species are fundamental aspects of the zoo's mission. The park also provides panoramic views of Mount Khangchendzonga, adding to its allure.

A zoo in beautiful surroundings
The zoo has some nicely laid out large enclosures for most animals. It’s set in a natural forest which makes for a pleasant walk. The walk is hard work at places so plan accordingly.

lack of effective management
The wildlife enclosure is somewhat underwhelming, with only a handful of animals and birds, numbering less than ten in total. The lack of effective management is evident, as there are no clear marking..
