Type of destination: Mountain Pass
Ideal visit duration: 2-3 hours
Closed in: Mondays and Sundays, and during winter due to heavy snowfalls
Nathula Pass, at an altitude of 4,310 meters above sea level, forms a part of a side-shoot of the prehistoric Silk Road. It is one of the highest drivable roads in the world that connects India with Tibet. To its eastern side, it flanks the ancient Nathu La and Chumbi Valley enclosed by the majestic peaks of the Eastern Himalayas. Historically, it was a corridor of passage between India and Tibet before it was closed in 1962. In 2006, Nathula was reopened for trade and attracts visitors due to its picturesque landscape, diverse alpine flora and fauna, and the unique experience of viewing the fenced border with soldiers on both sides. Tourists also visit the war memorial and the exhibition center of the Indian Army. Being a strategic location, Nathula Pass plays a significant role in Sino-Indian relations. The region's beauty and mystique are enhanced on clear days when views extend deep into the Tibetan plateau, with the sight of the magnificent Chomolhari peak.
