Rumtek Monastery, also known as the Dharma Chakra Centre, is a gompa located in the Indian state of Sikkim near the capital Gangtok. It is one of the largest and most significant monasteries in Sikkim and is the seat of the Karma Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism. The monastery is situated on the top of a hill facing the city of Gangtok. Established in the mid-20th century by the 12th Karmapa, it was built to replicate the original Kagyu headquarters in Tibet which was destroyed. The architecture of Rumtek Monastery is one of its most striking features, exhibiting the zenith of Tibetan Buddhist artistry. The complex includes a beautiful shrine temple and a monastery for the monks. Additionally, the place houses a golden stupa containing the relics of the 16th Karmapa, making it an important pilgrimage site. Surrounded by lush green landscapes, Rumtek offers a tranquil and spiritual experience. Inside, visitors can see intricate murals, thangkas, and statues. The annual dances and ceremonies held here are vibrant and invite numerous visitors.

A bit far from the city, a good place to visit. Can be skipped if there is shortage of time. A quiet place which offers panoramic views of Gangtok from roof top.
