Kalpavriksha, located in Joshimath, Uttarakhand, India, is a sacred and ancient tree that holds great significance in Hindu mythology. This mystical tree is believed to be over 1200 years old, making it an emblem of eternity and divine providence. According to local beliefs, the sage Adi Shankaracharya meditated under the Kalpavriksha and established one of the four cardinal pīthas (institutes) here, thus making Joshimath an important pilgrimage center. The tree is a passerine species, and though it is not as grand and lush as it once might have been, it still inspires awe and reverence among those who visit. The tree stands within a temple complex housing shrines and idols, which draws a steady stream of devotees and sightseers. The area around the tree is imbued with a serene and tranquil atmosphere, making it a spot for meditation and contemplation. Joshimath functions as a base for trekkers and pilgrims heading to higher altitudes in the Himalayas, including Badrinath and the Valley of Flowers.
