The Kavvayi Backwaters located near Payyannur in the Kannur district of Kerala, India, is a serene and expansive network of water bodies, fed by five rivers merging into it. Stretching over 15 kilometers, it forms one of the largest backwaters in North Kerala and is named after the Kavvayi island close to Payyannur. Traditional houseboats and small country boats traverse these tranquil waters, offering a glimpse into the unhurried rural life along its banks filled with greenery, paddy fields, and coconut palms. Where the backwaters meet the Arabian Sea, there is a beautiful confluence of freshwater and saltwater, supporting a rich biodiversity. This less commercialized destination offers an authentic backwater experience, a respite from the crowded scenes typical of more famous backwater locations in Kerala.
