St. Angelo Fort, also known as Kannur Fort, is a massive Portuguese fort located in Kannur, Kerala, India. It was constructed by the first Portuguese Viceroy of India, Dom Francisco de Almeida in 1505. The fort stands on a cliff overlooking the Arabian Sea and was initially built as a wooden structure which was later replaced with stone. Throughout history, St. Angelo's Fort has changed hands multiple times among the Portuguese, the Dutch, the Arakkal Sultanate, and finally, the British. The fort is renowned for its massive walls, a deep moat, and the well-preserved structure that offers a glimpse into the bygone era of colonial struggles in India. It has an impressive gateway, a chapel, a stable, and several compartments that showcase the typical European military architecture. The fort also provides a panoramic view of the Moppila Bay and Dharmadam Island. Today, it stands as a testament to the historical significance and cultural exchange that occurred on the Malabar Coast and is a popular tourist attraction.
