Best Time To Visit Khardung La Pass (Leh) In 2026 - 2027

Visit Khardung La Pass: Optimal Season

The best time to visit Khardung La Pass, regarded as one of the highest motorable roads in the world, is during the summer months, from May to September. During this period, the snow from winter has usually melted enough to allow safe passage through the pass. Travelers can enjoy clear skies and relatively warmer weather, which ranges from 10°C to 15°C during the day. This is an ideal time for motorcycle enthusiasts and adventure seekers to traverse the challenging terrain, as the roads are in better condition and the risk of landslides is significantly reduced. However, it’s important to remain cautious, as the weather can be unpredictable and sudden changes can occur.

For those who are keen on experiencing the pass without the bustling crowds, late September and early October might be the best alternative, as the tourist influx is lower, but there’s an increased risk of snowfall. It is critical to avoid the winter months from November to April when the pass is often closed due to heavy snowfall and extreme temperatures that can plummet to -40°C. Proper acclimatization is also crucial, as Khardung La sits at an elevation of about 5,359 meters (17,582 feet) above sea level, posing risks associated with high altitude sickness. Always check current conditions and consult with local authorities before planning your journey to this breathtaking yet demanding destination.
