Kochi (Cochin), Kerala - A Glimpse Into the History of Tourism

Kochi, also known as Cochin, is a major port city on the south-west coast of India. This charming city set on a cluster of islands and narrow peninsulas is often referred to as the "Queen of the Arabian Sea". The rich history of Kochi as a trading hub from as early as the 14th century has significantly influenced its cultural and tourism landscape. Over the years, Kochi has emerged as a prominent destination for both domestic and international travelers, offering an interesting blend of heritage, modernity, and natural beauty.

The Evolution of Kochi as a Tourist Destination

The history of tourism in Kochi can be traced back to the times when it was an active participant in the spice trade with multiple colonial powers. The Portuguese, the Dutch, and later the British left their mark on this city, thereby creating a multicultural environment ripe for tourism.

The pivotal turning point came when the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama discovered the sea route to India and landed in Kappad, close to Kozhikode, in 1498. This led Kochi to eventually become the first European colony in India when the Portuguese settled here in the early 16th century. The historic sites, such as St. Francis Church, where Vasco da Gama was once buried, and the Santa Cruz Basilica, attract thousands of visitors each year.

The Dutch captured Kochi in the 17th century, followed by the British in the 18th century. Their rule brought about significant economic and social changes, which further led to the establishment of Kochi as an inviting destination for travelers. The Dutch Palace, with its intricate murals and traditional Keralite architecture, stands testimony to these colonial ties.

In the 20th century, especially after India's independence, tourism slowly began to pick up pace. Kochi's natural harbors and scenic environment combined with its historic sites and the fame of Kerala's backwaters made it a unique destination on India's map of tourism.

With the rise of eco-tourism, Kochi saw an upsurge in the tourism industry in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Places like Fort Kochi, Jew Town, Mattancherry, and Willingdon Island became must-visit spots for their cultural heritage and picturesque beauty.
