Kopan Monastery is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery located on the outskirts of Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal. Perched on a hilltop with panoramic views of the Kathmandu Valley, it was founded by Lama Yeshe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche in 1975. The monastery belongs to the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition (FPMT), an international network of Gelugpa dharma centers, and serves as a retreat and study center for monks, nuns, and lay practitioners. With its serene environment and lush gardens, Kopan is an oasis of peace and tranquility. The monastery is known for its courses on Tibetan Buddhism, meditation retreats, and dharma talks, attracting students and spiritual seekers from around the world. The main gompa, or prayer hall, is adorned with traditional Tibetan art and statues, and the daily rituals of the monks are a fascinating insight into monastic life. The monastery also runs a school for young monks, providing education in both Buddhist philosophy and modern subjects. Kopan is not just a center for spiritual learning but also a community devoted to service and compassion.
