Lothal, one of the most prominent cities of the ancient Indus valley civilization, is situated in the Bhal region of the modern state of Gujarat. Discovered in 1954, Lothal stands as a testimony to the great achievements of the Indus Valley civilization in town planning, arts, crafts, and trade. Known for its city layout, with a citadel and a lower town with residential structures, Lothal also had an innovative dockyard, one of the world's earliest known, which connected the city to an ancient course of the Sabarmati river, allowing for trade with the hinterland. The site features well-planned streets with drainages, a sophisticated underground drainage system, and evidence of vibrant bead-making industry. The excavated remains reveal the use of standardized weights, brick sizes, and a rich culture that thrived over 4000 years ago. The Archaeological Museum near the site houses many artifacts found during excavations, including terracotta ornaments, potteries, and beads.
