Lothal Dockyard, situated in the ancient city of Lothal in Gujarat, India, is one of the primary sites of the Indus Valley Civilization. Dating back to 2400 BCE, it is one of the world's earliest known docks, reflecting the maritime heritage of the Harappan civilization. This archaeological marvel provides insights into the trade systems and urban planning of the time. The dockyard includes a basin connected to a river channel, which during that period, would have facilitated the movement of goods and helped in maintaining a trade link with distant lands. The site also presents the remains of a well-planned city with a grid layout, a sophisticated drainage system, and structures like warehouses and residences. Lothal also had a bead-making industry and evidence of metallurgy. Excavations at the site have unearthed artifacts such as beads, pottery, and ornamental items that depict the daily life and the advanced state of urban civilization in the Bronze Age.
