The History of Tourism in Mangaluru (Mangalore), Karnataka, India

Mangaluru, also known as Mangalore, is a picturesque coastal city in the Indian state of Karnataka. With its deep-rooted history and cultural significance, it has always been a city that has attracted visitors from different parts of the world. The history of tourism in Mangaluru dates back to the era of European colonial powers when the city was a strategic port on the Arabian Sea.

The Portuguese, who arrived in the 16th century, left a profound impact on the architecture and culture of the city. This is reflected in the many churches and colonial buildings that still stand today, which are significant tourist attractions. The 20th century saw Mangaluru developing as a commercial center, with people arriving primarily for business-related activities.

However, it wasn't until the late 20th and early 21st centuries that the city began to gain prominence as a leisure tourism destination. This shift was largely due to its beautiful beaches, rich cultural heritage, and the growth of the Indian middle class, which led to an increase in domestic travel. Tourists flocked to spots such as Tannirbhavi Beach, Panambur Beach, and the Pilikula Nisargadhama eco-educational tourist park.
