A Brief History of Tourism at Mukteshwar Mahadev Temple

Nestled in the Kumaon Hills of Uttarakhand, the Mukteshwar Mahadev Temple is a revered shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple, situated at an elevation of around 2,312 meters above sea level, offers panoramic views of the Himalayas, including India’s second-highest peak, Nanda Devi. The temple itself is said to be 350 years old and derives its name from the belief that Lord Shiva gives ‘mukti’ or liberation to those who worship him here. The region around Mukteshwar was developed by the British as a research and education institute (IVRI) in 1893. Since then, the small town has gradually turned into a quaint yet favorite spot for tourists seeking spiritual solace and natural beauty.

The Growth of Tourism

Tourism in Mukteshwar began to pick up pace with the development of infrastructure and better connectivity to the rest of the country. Initially frequented by the pilgrims, the postcard-perfect hamlet soon caught the eyes of nature lovers, trekkers, and those looking for a peaceful retreat away from the bustling cities.
