How To Reach Paro

Traveling to Paro, Bhina

Welcome to the beautiful destination of Paro, Bhutan! Here’s your comprehensive guide on how to reach this serene and culturally rich town nestled in the Himalayas.

By Air

The most convenient and quickest way to get to Paro is by air. Paro International Airport (PBH) is the only international airport in Bhutan. The following information will assist you in planning your flight to Paro:

  • Druk Air and Bhutan Airlines are the two airlines that operate international flights to and from Bhutan.
  • Direct flights to Paro are available from limited international locations, including Kathmandu (Nepal), Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati, Bagdogra (India), Bangkok (Thailand), and Dhaka (Bangladesh).
  • Visitors often find that flying from cities with direct flights to Bhutan provides a smoother travel experience.
  • Keep in mind that due to the valley's geographical location and surrounding peaks, flights to Paro are highly dependent on weather conditions, and scheduling may be affected by this.

By Land

If you’re up for an adventure and prefer to travel by land, there are three main land border crossings between Bhutan and India that you can use:

  • Phuentsholing: This is the most common border crossing, located approximately 160 kilometers from Paro.
  • Gelephu: Situated around 250 kilometers from Paro, this crossing can also be used to enter Bhutan.
  • Samdrup Jongkhar: Located in the southeast of Bhutan, this crossing is farther away, around 700 kilometers from Paro, and less commonly used by tourists.

Travel from these border towns to Paro will likely be by car or bus and can take several hours.

Travel Permissions

Before traveling to Bhutan, all tourists (except for citizens of India, Bangladesh, and the Maldives) must obtain a Visa and should book their trip through a licensed Bhutanese tour operator. Independent travel in Bhutan is not permitted. The tour operator will arrange for all travel permits required to enter and travel within Bhoomayan.

We hope this information helps you plan your trip to the lovely town of Paro. Safe travels!
