Awesome stay at Ahilya Fort Hotel.
We were allotted the Hawa Bangla room with a panoramic view of the Narmada. My wife almost refused to step out anywhere. The food was awesome and sumptuous - lunch was continental and dinner Indian. It was served at a different location every day. We stayed 3 nights. They do a nice mocktails service every evening at 7 pm along with some snacks. The charges include laundry too. Pallav Pahuja as hospitality manager was caring. Emme the elderly American lady was cute and attentive. Oscar the intern from US was interesting to talk to. Kunta Bai the matriarch almost became our friend. They do get many guests from overseas and they are geared to handle their needs well. The fort has a wonderful Shiva temple where 10000 lingas are prayed to daily. We participated in one such Pooja. For us it was a once in a lifetime experience. We covered Mandu from there and the experience was awesome.

Peaceful getaway
A lovely getaway from the humdrum busyness of everyday! A nice location on Narmada banks filled with history. Offers interesting experiences - A wonderful sunrise boat ride to the submerged Baneshwar temple, a visit to see the local weaves in the making at Rehwa, delightful evenings lit up amidst greenery with innovative mock tails and meals at multiple locations across the property. A great farm to table with fresh produce at every meal. A melodious evening Arti to compound the serene and peaceful experience.

Wonderful Experience!!
All your senses are embraced, whether by the profound religious/ historic immersion, the daily culinary delights that tantalize your taste buds, the impeccable service designed to pamper you, or the breathtaking vistas that leave you feeling incredibly fortunate to witness the mesmerizing sunrises and sunsets. This creates an utterly unique and unforgettable experience. Just be aware it’s a heritage building there might be challenging access areas if you have mobility issues . The drive from Indore is over a winding road which would be an experience if you are not used to such conditions. The rooms have different categories and amenities so your experience will also vary based on what you choose . The food is fixed menu curated daily it’s very diverse but there might be someone on your group who may not take to it . They do not sell alcohol as it’s a temple town you can discuss your options before heading down

Day trippers beware
This is a stunning property, lovingly maintained. I have never stayed here, but visited for lunch — during the pandemic —- and was charmed. The staff were friendly and warm, the food was beautifully served in a lovely setting. Therefore when I was again in the region last week with my family, I booked lunch there again, despite the eye-popping price, and it was a disappointing experience. The menu was underwhelming, served without flair, and the general experience was that you were kind of on sufferance. And charming Labbu’s cafe nearby, which is apparently run by the same people, was distinctly non apologetic about not being able to offer several items on their menu.

A disappointment, not worth it
We were very much looking forward to staying in this place, but it has turned out to be a sad disappointment. It’s a two star hotel with an absurdly inflated price. We had a very tired bathroom and an extremely dark, cave-like bedroom, and there weren’t any of the little touches that can bring atmosphere and comfort to an older hotel. Things that are now found in all good hotels in India - like cotton dressing gowns, proper toiletries, a mini bar, some form of room service, etc - were missing. The food was OK but having no choice at all (other than vegetarian or non-vegetarian) is of course limiting. The pool was unusable, the water cleaning system having broken down due to the heavy rains. The setting and the history of the place deserve so much better. We all agreed that considering what you are paying, even outside of high season, this place is really not worth it. After nearly three years in India, and stays in very good hotels of all kinds all over the country, I’ll be discouraging friends from staying at Ahilya Fort. What a shame.
