Rudrasagar Lake (Agartala) FAQs In 2026 - 2027

Rudrasagar Lake, also known as Rudijala, is a natural lake located about 55 km from Agartala, the capital city of Tripura in Northeast India. It is famous for the Neermahal palace situated in the middle of the lake, which was constructed by Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur in the 1930s as a summer residence.

Rudrasagar Lake attracts tourists due to its picturesque beauty and the historical Neermahal palace. The lake offers opportunities for boating and photography, while the palace is an example of exquisite royal architecture that blends Hindu and Muslim architectural styles. The serene environment and the cultural significance of the site make it a must-visit for travelers to Tripura.

Rudrasagar Lake is accessible by road from Agartala. The nearest airport is Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport in Agartala. Visitors can hire taxis or take local transport from the city to the lake. It's about a one and a half-hour drive from the capital.

The best time to visit Rudrasagar Lake is from October to February when the weather is pleasant, and the skies are clear. Monsoon season might not be ideal due to heavy rainfall, which can disrupt travel plans and outdoor activities.

Visiting the Rudrasagar Lake itself generally does not require an entry fee, but there may be a charge for visiting the Neermahal palace located within the lake or for activities such as boat rides.

Tourists can enjoy boat rides to get a closer view of the Neermahal palace, engage in bird watching, photography, and relax in the tranquil surroundings of the lake. There are also festivals and cultural events organized on the lake's premises, particularly during the Neermahal Water Festival.

While there are no accommodation options on the lake itself, tourists can find hotels, resorts, and guest houses in the nearby town of Melaghar or back in Agartala, which provide a range of lodging options for different budgets.

Tourists can taste the local Tripuri cuisine, which includes dishes made with bamboo shoots, jackfruit, and fish. Traditional meals often feature rice, a staple of Northeast India, along with spicy and flavorful curries that reflect the unique tastes of the region.

Rudrasagar Lake is not commonly used for swimming, primarily due to safety considerations and to preserve the cleanliness of the lake. The focus is on boating and enjoyment of the scenic and culturally rich environment.

The cultural significance of Rudrasagar Lake stems from the illustrious Neermahal palace and the festivals that take place there. The lake is a cultural hub where the Neermahal Water Festival, which includes boat races and other festivities, is celebrated annually, attracting both locals and tourists. The lake and palace are considered symbols of the rich heritage of Tripura.
