Sakya Tangyud Monastery, set on the edge of Hikkim village in Spiti Valley, Himachal Pradesh, is one of the highest altitude gompas (monasteries) in India, situated at over 4,520 meters above sea level. Belonging to the Sakya sect of Tibetan Buddhism, it is a significant center for Buddhist learning and culture. Structurally, the monastery resembles a fortified castle, surrounded by massive walls, and has stood the test of time since its inception around the early 14th century. The traditional mud construction reflects a unique style adapted to the harsh climatic conditions of the cold desert area. Within its hallowed interiors, visitors can find exquisite murals and paintings depicting various aspects of Buddhist religion and history. The monastery also houses monks who engage in daily prayers and meditation, contributing to the serene atmosphere that imbues the area.
